On July 7, 2016 Congressman Walter Jones (NC-3) introduced legislation called “The Social Security Guarantee Act of 2016” for all eligible recipients [ illegal immigrants excluded ]. The Social Security Guarantee Act (H.R. 5670), if adopted, guarantees the right of individuals to receive Social Security benefits in full and with accurate, Senior American based, annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs).
There is NO LEGAL GUARANTEE for Social Security benefits, which means Congress can make ANY BENEFIT CUTS or the Social Security Administration may pay PARTIAL BENEFITS if the necessary funds are unavailable from the Social Security Trust Fund.
The Social Security Guarantee Act of 2016 would give all eligible recipients a benefit guarantee certificate from the Secretary of the Treasury that would require benefits to be paid to Seniors IN FULL. Also, this bill would make annual COLAs more fair and accurate, helping older Americans keep up with the rising costs of health care, food, and utilities.
NSCC supports the Social Security Guarantee Act of 2016 and we strongly disagree with many in Congress who are considering proposals that would cut, reduce, delay or eliminate Social Security benefits. We will fight for the passage of this bill.
